Gene Chelberg

Administrator Representative

Eugene R. Chelberg currently serves as the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs at San Francisco State University – a position he has held since 2007. Reporting directly to the Vice President for Student Affairs & Enrollment Management, he works closely with the Vice President (VP) and all members of her cabinet to improve student retention and graduation through the strategic optimization of human, physical, and financial resources. As Associate Vice President, one of Gene's greatest joys is working with first generation and underrepresented students, along with faculty and staff, to establish, improve and maintain programs and services that are culturally relevant and affirming of the intersectionality of student identities and experiences.

Today, Gene is focused in the areas of student access, health and wellness, basic needs, and assessment. He is privileged to lead five directors and more than 100 faculty and staff across five facilities in the student-centered work of their units. Collectively, Gene's team is responsible for advancing Children’s Campus, Counseling & Psychological Services, Disability Programs & Resource Center, Health Promotion & Wellness, and Student Health Services. Additionally, he serves as the University's ADA/504 Compliance Officer. Gene's portfolio also includes an award-winning Accessible Technology Initiative, a growing health and wellness effort that is implementing a comprehensive anti-sexual violence training campaign, as well as the campus Basic Needs Initiative which is working to improve student success through reducing food and housing insecurity among SF State Gators.

He holds a B.S. from Minnesota and an Executive Master of Management and Disability Services from the University of San Francisco. When Gene is not working, he enjoys exploring the culinary and outdoor treasures of San Francisco. He shares a home with his husband, David, his guide dog, Bates, and their two calico cat sisters, Ruthie and Ester.
