Faculty Representative; Chair of Academic Senate

Dr. Jackson Wilson is the current chair of the San Francisco State University Academic Senate, the center of shared governance at San Francisco State University.  He has previously served as a senator on the 23-campus Academic Senate of the California State University and chaired the Academic Senate’s Academic Policies Committee.

Dr. Wilson is a professor and former department chair of the Department of Recreation, Parks & Tourism.  He earned a Ph.D. in Leisure Behavior from Indiana University, Master’s in Economics of Education from Columbia University, and Bachelor’s in Economics from University of Washington.  He has worked for a wide range of outdoor education organizations in the US and abroad and has also served as an economist and funds administrator for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Dr. Wilson’s research focuses on the marginalization of people perceived as experiencing homelessness and nonhuman wild animals in urban park spaces.  His research has also included the health impacts of soundscape, solar exposure, and stress while recreating in outdoor environments.  Dr. Wilson has secured over $1.8 million in research funding as a PI or co-PI.
